Sweden has a handful of public holidays that land on a Thursday, most notably Kristi himmelsfärdsdag (Ascension Day) in May. When that happens, a huge number of people take the Friday off as well — a klämdag, literally a "squeezed day" — turning a single Thursday holiday into a four-day weekend for most of the country at once.

If you're not used to the Swedish calendar, this can catch you out: flights and travel days around these bridge weekends get busier than the holiday itself would suggest, simply because so many people are travelling on the same extra day off.

When a public holiday falls on a Thursday, many Swedish workplaces treat the Friday as an unofficial extra day off, either through flexible hours, banked time or simply a quiet office everyone has agreed to skip. It isn't a formal public holiday, but in practice it behaves like one — shops keep closer to normal hours, but travel patterns shift as if it were a genuine long weekend.

A klämdag weekend means a lot of people leaving the city or the country on the Wednesday evening or Thursday morning, and a similar wave returning on the Sunday.
