Flying on Midsommar Eve

Midsommar (midsummer) is a bank holiday weekend built around the Friday closest to the summer solstice. Swedes traditionally leave the cities entirely — for a family house in the archipelago, a lakeside cottage, or wherever relatives gather — and the exodus starts the evening before. By Midsommar Eve itself, central Stockholm can feel closed even though most buildings are technically open.

For a traveller this mostly shows up as quiet: quiet streets, quiet public transport, and noticeably quiet roads out to Arlanda, since the outbound traffic that normally clogs the E4 on a Friday afternoon has mostly already left by Thursday night.

Assume smaller shops, many restaurants and most services are closed or running short hours from midday onward. Supermarkets typically stay open with reduced hours, and hotels operate normally — but don't plan around finding a pharmacy, a specific restaurant or a last-minute shop open in the evening. If you need something specific (medication, a SIM card, cash), sort it out the day before.

The airport itself keeps operating — flights don't stop for Midsommar — but the surrounding services you might expect on any other travel day, cafés and shops in town on your way there, are the ones that thin out.

Because so much of the region has already left for the countryside by the time you're heading to Arlanda, the drive itself tends to be easier than usual — less traffic, fewer delays, a more predictable journey time. It's one of the only days where the road to the airport is emptier than the airport itself.

• If your flight is early evening, remember restaurants and shops near your hotel may already be shut for the day when you're getting ready to leave

A transfer booked in advance sidesteps the one thing that could still catch you out on Midsommar Eve: trying to arrange a ride at the last minute on a day when normal services are running thin. The fixed price and pickup time are agreed before the holiday starts, so there's nothing to sort out once shops close and the city goes quiet.
