Self-Transfer at Arlanda: Recheck Bags and Timing

On a single connected itinerary, checked luggage typically transfers automatically between flights. On a self-transfer with two separate tickets, it usually doesn't — you'll need to collect your bags after the first flight and check them in again for the second, exactly as if you were starting a fresh trip partway through the airport. Build real time into your connection for this; it's a genuine additional step, not a formality.

Even with a generous connection window, leaving the airport during a self-transfer adds risk that a self-transfer already carries plenty of on its own — security queues, unexpected delays, simply misjudging how long the airport's own processes take. Unless you have a genuinely long gap and a specific, well-planned reason, it's generally safer to treat the connection time as airport time and nothing else.

If your self-transfer includes an overnight gap — your first flight lands too late, or your second leaves too early, for airport time alone to make sense — a booked car to a nearby hotel and back the next morning is the one scenario where leaving the airport is clearly the right call.
