Korean Travellers to Stockholm

South Korean passport holders don't currently need a visa for a short visit to Sweden, which makes the paperwork side of a trip simple — but the journey itself is still long, whether nonstop or via a hub, depending on what airlines are flying when you travel, and there's one relatively new step at the border worth knowing about before you land.

This guide covers what visa-free entry does and doesn't mean, the EU's newer border registration process, and choosing a car that fits your luggage for the ride from Arlanda into Stockholm.

Visa-free, but not paperwork-free

As a South Korean citizen, you can visit Sweden and the rest of the Schengen area without a visa for short stays, under the EU's visa-exemption arrangement. That covers tourism and short business visits — it doesn't cover working or studying in Sweden, which need a separate permit arranged in advance. Visa-exempt travellers should also check the current status of the EU's planned ETIAS travel authorisation before they fly.

Visa-free entry still means going through border checks on arrival, and it doesn't exempt you from the EU's newer biometric registration requirement described below.

The EU's Entry/Exit System

The EU has introduced a border registration process, generally called the Entry/Exit System, that records a photo and fingerprints for visa-exempt visitors on their first entry to the Schengen area — it applies to South Korean travellers at Arlanda the same way it applies at other Schengen borders. On a first registration it can take a little longer than the routine passport check you might remember from an earlier trip.

The system's exact rollout and process have changed over time, so check the current guidance on the official EU or Swedish border authority pages before you travel rather than assuming what a previous trip involved.

Choosing a car for your luggage

Whether you're travelling for a short holiday or a longer stay, a standard car takes up to four pieces of luggage, no more than two of them large, so a large suitcase and a cabin bag or two fit without issue. If you're travelling with more — several bags, a colleague on the same booking — checking the category sizes before you book avoids finding out it's tight at the kerb.

After a long flight

Whether your route was direct or through a hub, a pre-booked transfer removes the one uncertain step left in the journey.
