Swedish Receipts: What a 'Kvitto' Must Show
Updated 3 min read
Whether you're a business traveller claiming expenses or simply want proof of what you paid, understanding what a Swedish receipt — a kvitto — is expected to show helps you check that what you've been given is actually sufficient for your purposes.

What a proper Swedish receipt generally includes
In general terms, a valid Swedish business receipt shows the seller's details (name and organisation number), the date, a description of what was purchased, the total price, and the VAT rate and VAT amount broken out separately rather than folded into a single figure. This general structure applies across most retail and service transactions in Sweden, including transport, and is what most foreign companies' expense systems expect to see as well.
Why the VAT breakdown matters
For business travellers, the separate VAT line is often the specific detail an expense system or accountant is looking for — it lets a company correctly account for VAT paid, which a bundled total price can't demonstrate on its own. If you're claiming a trip as a business expense, check that any receipt you receive shows this breakdown explicitly rather than just a final total.
What our own receipt shows
Every booking generates a receipt with the total price, the VAT rate (6% on passenger transport) and the VAT amount shown separately — issued to either a private person or a company, whichever you booked as. If you're booking on a company's behalf, selecting the business option at booking preselects the company receipt, so it's set up correctly from the start rather than needing to be corrected afterwards.
Keeping receipts for expenses or insurance
Beyond routine expense claims, a proper receipt matters for anything you might later need to substantiate — a travel insurance claim after a missed connection, for instance, where every extra cost including a transfer typically needs documentation. Save the receipt as soon as it arrives rather than assuming you can retrieve it later; it's a habit worth having regardless of who's paying for the trip.
If a receipt doesn't look right
If a receipt you receive from any Swedish service seems to be missing the VAT breakdown or the seller's details, it's worth asking for a corrected version before you leave — it's far easier to sort out at the point of purchase than after the fact, particularly once you're back home and the seller is harder to reach. For anything booked with us, contact us directly if your receipt looks incomplete and we'll sort it out.

Questions people ask before booking
What does a valid Swedish receipt need to show?
In general terms: the seller's details, the date, a description of the purchase, the total price, and the VAT rate and amount broken out separately rather than bundled into one figure.
Does our receipt show VAT separately?
Yes — every booking's receipt shows the total price with the VAT rate and VAT amount shown separately, whether issued to a private person or a company.
Can I get a receipt made out to my company?
Yes — select the business option when booking and the company receipt is preselected, so it's set up correctly from the start.
Do I need to request the receipt, or is it automatic?
It's generated with every booking automatically — you don't need to ask for it separately.
Why does the VAT breakdown matter for a business trip?
Many expense systems and accountants specifically need the VAT amount shown separately to account for it correctly, which a single bundled total can't demonstrate.
