Alvik to Arlanda: Why the Tram Hub Doesn't Take You to the Airport

The trams and metro at Alvik are excellent for getting around Stockholm itself — into the city centre, across to other neighbourhoods, connecting into the wider network. It's a genuinely convenient place to live or stay for day-to-day movement around the city, and that reputation is well earned.

None of Alvik's tram or metro lines run directly to Arlanda — getting there by public transport means travelling into the city or to a connecting point first, then changing onto whatever gets you the rest of the way to the airport. That's a manageable trip with just a day bag, but it changes character with luggage, particularly early in the morning or with a tight flight to catch, when a change of trains or trams adds both time and a point where something can go wrong.

If you've got time to spare, light luggage, and no particular time pressure, the public transport route from Alvik to Arlanda is a perfectly reasonable way to travel, and plenty of people do it without issue. It's a fair, honest option worth considering if your circumstances suit it.

Where it gets harder to justify the changes is an early flight, a full set of luggage, a group travelling together, or simply wanting one less thing to manage on a travel day. A car from your Alvik address goes straight to Arlanda in one trip, at a fixed price agreed before you book, with no interchange and no timing gamble on connections lining up.

The honest answer is that neither option is universally right — it depends on your luggage, your flight time, and how much you value not having to think about the journey at all. Comparing the two directly for your own trip, rather than defaulting to whichever you'd use at home, tends to give the better answer for Alvik specifically, given how well-connected it is for everything except the one route that actually matters on travel day.
