The Region Between Stockholm and Uppsala: A Traveller's Map

If you're new to the area, the string of names between Stockholm and Uppsala can be hard to place — Sigtuna, Märsta, Knivsta, Upplands Väsby, Rosersberg and Uppsala itself all sit somewhere in the same corridor, but which one is closest to the airport, which is a town in its own right, and which is really a Stockholm suburb aren't obvious from the names alone.

The corridor, roughly north to south from Arlanda

Arlanda itself sits roughly in the middle of this corridor, with towns strung out along the main road and rail line running north towards Uppsala and south towards Stockholm. Understanding the rough layout helps more than the exact distances: Märsta and Sigtuna sit just to the west of the airport, with Rosersberg a little further south; Knivsta and then Uppsala lie to the north; and to the south and southeast, Upplands Väsby, Bollstanäs and Vallentuna sit between the airport and the edge of Stockholm proper.

"Near Arlanda" doesn't mean "in Stockholm"

One of the more common mix-ups is assuming everything close to the airport is effectively part of Stockholm. It isn't — Sigtuna, Märsta and Knivsta are all their own towns with their own character, some considerably older than Stockholm itself, and treating them as airport suburbs undersells what's actually there if you have time to look around.

Is Sigtuna the same as Märsta?

No — they're both near Arlanda but are different towns. Sigtuna is a historic town in its own right; Märsta is the town right next to the airport on its western side, and the two sit close together.

Is Knivsta part of Uppsala?

No — Knivsta is its own municipality between Arlanda and Uppsala, commonly used by commuters heading further north.

Are Upplands Väsby, Vallentuna and Bollstanäs part of Stockholm?

No — they sit between the airport and Stockholm. Upplands Väsby and Vallentuna are municipalities of their own, and Bollstanäs is part of Upplands Väsby; none is a district of the City of Stockholm, though all are within easy reach of both.
