What to finish the night before
Pack everything you can before you go to bed, including anything the children will need immediately on waking — a comfort item, a change of clothes, snacks for the car. Lay out documents for every traveller in one place by the door, not spread across bags, so there's nothing to search for while you're also managing a child.
If you can, dress the children in travel clothes before they go to sleep, or have them ready to slip on with minimal disruption — the fewer decisions and changes needed in the actual moment of waking them, the smoother the transition to the car.
