Roadworks on the Way to Arlanda: Checking Before You Leave

Trafikverket, the Swedish Transport Administration, publishes current roadworks and traffic disruptions on its own site and in its traffic app, and it's the most reliable source for what's actually closed or slowed on a given day — more reliable than guessing from a previous trip or a generic map app that hasn't caught up with a new closure.

If you're checking the morning of a departure, look specifically for the E4 north of Stockholm and any route close to your own pickup address, since roadworks on a smaller connecting road can matter as much as the main E4 stretch itself.

A lane closure or a reduced speed limit adds minutes, not necessarily a lot, but it's the kind of delay that matters most on a morning with a flight to catch and no slack built in. It's rarely predictable weeks ahead, which is why checking close to the day — rather than trusting an old estimate — is worth the two minutes it takes.

Your driver knows the current road situation and adjusts the route in real time — that's part of the job, not something you need to manage. The price you agreed when you booked doesn't change because of a detour or a slower stretch of the E4; the fixed price shown before you book covers the trip regardless of the route taken on the day.

If you know in advance that roadworks are affecting your route badly, it's worth building extra margin into your pickup time rather than assuming the driver can make up lost time — there's a limit to what any route change can do about a genuinely congested main road.

Trafikverket's disruption listings distinguish between a short-term closure — a single lane out for a few hours of resurfacing — and a longer project that runs for weeks or months, and the two need different amounts of planning. A short closure is worth checking the morning of; a longer project affecting your regular route is worth knowing about a few days ahead, since it changes the picture for every trip during that period, not just one.

If you travel to Arlanda regularly and notice a long-running project on your usual route, it's worth checking Trafikverket again a little closer to each trip anyway — phasing on a multi-month project often changes which lanes are affected and when, so the picture from a month ago isn't necessarily the picture on your travel day.

The E4 is the main route, but depending on where you're starting from, your trip to Arlanda might use other roads entirely, or only join the E4 for part of the journey. If your pickup address is well outside central Stockholm, check for disruptions on your specific local roads as well as the E4 itself — a closure on a smaller connecting road can add just as much time as one on the main route, and it's easy to overlook if you're only thinking about the E4.
