Flying to the US from Arlanda: ESTA and Extra Checks

Most travellers eligible for the US Visa Waiver Program need an approved ESTA before they fly, applied for online in advance — it is not something granted at the airport. Check the official US Customs and Border Protection ESTA site for eligibility and to apply; if your nationality isn't covered by the Visa Waiver Program, you'll need a visa instead, arranged well ahead through the relevant US embassy or consulate process.

Airlines check for a valid ESTA or visa at check-in, and without one you won't be permitted to board — this is squarely the airline's and US authorities' rule, not something a transfer or the airport can work around.

US-bound flights commonly involve additional questions or checks at the gate beyond the standard security and passport process other routes use, which airlines and ground staff build extra time for. It's a normal part of flying to the US, not a sign anything is wrong, but it does mean the last stretch before boarding can take noticeably longer than a European route.

Allow more time than you would for most other international destinations — check your specific airline's recommended arrival time for US routes, since it's often earlier than the general guidance for other flights.
