Winter Departures: Snow, De-Icing and Leaving Earlier

Snow and ice reduce safe driving speeds and can slow traffic generally, even on well-maintained main routes like the E4. Swedish law requires winter tyres during the winter season, and licensed taxis are fitted accordingly, but tyres don't remove the need for a slower, more careful drive in genuinely poor conditions — the road itself is what sets the pace.

Aircraft are de-iced before departure in freezing or snowy conditions, which is a normal, expected step airlines build into winter operations — not a sign anything unusual is happening. What it doesn't do is move your boarding time later to compensate; boarding still closes when your airline says it does, and de-icing is one of the reasons airlines ask passengers to arrive with enough margin on winter days.

Add extra time to your normal routine specifically for the drive on a snowy or icy morning, on top of whatever margin you'd usually allow for security and the walk to your gate. The fixed price for your transfer is the same whatever the weather does — there's no winter surcharge — so the only thing to plan for is time, not cost.

If a significant snowfall is forecast for your travel morning, it's worth booking your pickup a little earlier than you might on an ordinary winter day, simply to give the drive more room.

SMHI, the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute, publishes weather forecasts and warnings that are worth checking the evening before a winter departure, particularly if snowfall is expected overnight or in the early morning. A forecast heavy snowfall warning is a reasonable trigger to move your pickup time earlier still, on top of the general winter margin discussed above.
