Bring Your Own Car Seat or Book One? Pros and Cons

Airlines vary in how they handle car seats — some allow them as an extra checked item at no charge, others count them against your baggage allowance, and rules differ for a seat used on board versus one just being transported. That's a question for your airline directly, since it changes by carrier and sometimes by route, and getting it wrong at check-in is not something we can help with after the fact.

Beyond the airline's rules, there's the physical reality: a car seat is bulky and awkward through two terminals, adds weight to whatever you're already pushing or carrying, and needs to survive baggage handling intact enough to trust with your child on the other end.

If your child is under one, or between one and three, request the seat in your booking notes and it's fitted and waiting before you land — one less bulky item to manage through check-in, security and two sets of arrivals, and one less thing that could get damaged in transit.

For a trip where the car seat is only needed for the transfer itself and not for the rest of your stay, this is usually the simpler option: no seat to store at your accommodation, no seat to repack for the flight home.

If your child needs the seat throughout the trip — for a rental car, for visiting relatives who'll drive you around, or because you're staying somewhere car seats aren't otherwise available — bringing your own solves the whole trip at once rather than just the airport transfer. In that case, booking one for the transfer too and using your own for everything else is unnecessary; just request the transfer without a seat and bring yours through both airports.

It's genuinely a case-by-case call, and either way is a reasonable choice — the point is knowing your options rather than assuming there's only one right way to do it.
