Will My Driver Speak English at Stockholm Arlanda?

It's a small worry, but a real one: you land in an unfamiliar country, you don't speak Swedish, your English might not be perfect either, and you're about to get into a car with a stranger and hope the two of you can sort out the basics — where you're going, roughly how long it takes, what to do if something's unclear.

This is a plain answer to that worry, and to the practical question underneath it: what actually happens if there's a language gap between you and your driver, and what tools you have to close it.

The short answer

Sweden has very high general English proficiency, and that extends to the professional driver population as it does to almost every service industry in the country — most drivers you'll meet on an Arlanda transfer will speak workable to fluent English. It isn't something we can promise as a guarantee for every single driver on every single trip, but it is the ordinary, expected case rather than a stroke of luck.

Where it matters more is when your own English is also a second language and you're worried about a conversation on both sides being imperfect. That's a fair thing to plan around, and the good news is that an airport transfer needs very little conversation to work.

What actually needs to be communicated on the trip

A pre-booked transfer is not a conversation-dependent service. Your route is set when you book — the destination address is already in the driver's system, agreed and paid for before you land — so there's no negotiation to have in the car about where you're going or what it costs. The two things that usually need a word or two of actual communication are confirming who you are at pickup, and letting the driver know if you'd like a window down, music off, or a stop for something small along the way. All of that works with a handful of shared words, a phone translation app, or simply pointing.

Because the destination, the route and the price are all fixed in advance, a language gap with your driver has far less room to cause a problem than it would with an unmetered cab where the destination and price still need to be explained and agreed after you get in.

Getting your driver's details before you land

Ninety minutes before your scheduled pickup, we send you your driver's name, phone number and licence plate by message. That's useful for more than just recognising the car — it gives you a direct line to message the driver in text if you need to, which is often easier across a language gap than a live phone conversation, since a short written message in simple English (or translated) is easy for either side to read carefully rather than parse on the fly.

If your flight is delayed, you don't need to explain that to anyone yourself — we track the actual arrival and move the pickup automatically, so there's no phone call needed just to manage timing.

What to have ready if you're worried about the gap

  • Your hotel or apartment address written down or saved as text, in case a spoken exchange doesn't land clearly
  • A translation app on your phone, ready before you land, for anything more than the basics
  • The driver's name and number from your pre-pickup message, so you can text rather than call if that's easier

Every driver is professionally licensed

Every driver on our platform holds a Swedish taxiförarlegitimation, the professional taxi driver licence, and every car operates under a Swedish taxi traffic permit. That's a separate point from language ability, but it matters for the same underlying worry — you're getting into a licensed, professional, accountable service, not an informal arrangement with an unknown stranger.

Questions people ask before booking

Can I request an English-speaking driver specifically?

We don't currently offer driver-language filtering as a booking option, but the large majority of drivers speak workable English, and the trip itself needs very little spoken communication since your route and price are fixed before you land.

What if I don't speak much English either?

That's fine — the booking is set up entirely online before the trip, so nothing about the route or price needs to be negotiated in person. A translation app covers anything beyond the basics of pickup and drop-off.

How do I identify my driver at the terminal?

You receive the driver's name, phone number and licence plate by message ninety minutes before pickup, so you know exactly who and what car to look for without needing a spoken exchange to confirm it.

Can I text my driver instead of calling?

Yes — the phone number we send you works for text messages, which many travellers find easier than a live call across a language gap.

What if my flight is delayed — do I need to explain that to the driver myself?

No. We track your flight's actual arrival automatically and adjust your driver's pickup — you don't need to contact anyone about timing.
