It's an easy thing to underestimate: a folded wheelchair takes up roughly the same boot space as a large suitcase, so a couple travelling with one chair, two large cases and a couple of cabin bags is carrying more than it looks like on paper. Booking the smallest category because "it's just two people" can leave you short on space once the chair is accounted for.

This guide is about planning for both — the chair and the luggage together — so the car that arrives actually has room for everything.

Counting the chair as luggage

In the luggage unit system, a folded manual wheelchair typically counts as roughly two units, the same as a large checked case. A folding power chair, depending on size, can run closer to the top of that range or beyond it. Once you add that to your actual suitcases, the total adds up faster than passenger count alone would suggest.

Working through an example

A couple travelling together — one wheelchair user and one companion — with a folded chair (about 2 units), two large cases (4 units) and two cabin bags (2 units) comes to roughly 8 units total. That's over a Standard, Electric or Business car's 6-unit budget, even though it's only two passengers. The SUV/XL category's 10-unit budget covers the same trip comfortably, with room to spare.

A single traveller with a folded chair and one large case sits well within the Standard category's budget. The point isn't that wheelchair users always need the bigger car — it's that the chair has to be counted, not assumed to be free space.
