Groups of Friends with More Luggage Than Seats

A group of friends flying in for a weekend — a bachelorette trip, a birthday, a reunion — usually has enough seats worked out before they've thought about luggage at all. Then everyone lands with a going-out bag on top of a regular suitcase, someone's brought an extra pair of shoes for every outfit, and the car that seemed obviously big enough for the headcount turns out to be tight on space.

This guide is about planning the vehicle by luggage, not passenger count, which is the part groups usually get wrong until they're standing at the kerb trying to work out where the last bag goes.

Seats are rarely the constraint — bags are

Every vehicle category has a set number of seats and a separate luggage budget, and for a group trip it's almost always the luggage budget that runs out first. A large checked case counts as two luggage units, a cabin bag as one, and the budget is shared across the whole car rather than divided per person — so four friends each bringing one large case and one cabin bag already adds up to twelve units before anyone's packed an extra pair of shoes.

That's double what a Standard, Electric or Business car's six-unit budget handles — those cars take 2 large bags + 2 cabin bags, or 4 cabin bags — even though four people fit the four seats easily. The mismatch between "we all fit" and "our bags all fit" is exactly what catches groups out.

Working out what you actually need

Add up your group's bags honestly before you book: each large case as two units, each cabin bag or backpack as one. A group of four or five with a large case and a cabin bag each is usually in SUV / XL territory — six seats and a ten-unit budget with up to four large cases; a group of six carrying that much is already past ten units. A bigger group, or one bringing noticeably more than average, is what the Minibus category is for, with eight seats and an eighteen-unit budget.

If you're not sure where you land, it's worth erring larger rather than smaller — a car with room to spare costs more than a cramped one only in comfort, not in a way that catches you out, since the price is fixed and shown before you book either way.

How do I know which car size fits our group's luggage?

Count your bags as units — a large case is two, a cabin bag is one — and add them up across the whole group. A Standard car's budget is six units; SUV / XL is ten; Minibus is eighteen.

Does the price go up per person in a group booking?

Is there room for going-out bags on top of regular suitcases?
