Splitting Business and Private Legs on Receipts
Updated 3 min read
Extending a work trip into a weekend of your own time is common enough — the flights are already booked, the destination's already worth a few extra days, and it's often cheaper than a separate trip later. The one thing to get right is the paperwork: your company's receipt should show the business travel, and the personal leg shouldn't appear on it at all.
This guide covers how to book the two parts of a bleisure trip so each produces the right receipt, without the private half quietly ending up on a company expense claim by accident.

Why this needs two bookings, not one
If the business portion of your trip is the arrival — landing for meetings, staying through the working week — and the personal portion is a return flight or an onward trip days later, book those as two separate transfers rather than one, even if you're using the same airport both times. Each booking carries its own receipt, so keeping them as distinct bookings is what actually keeps the costs distinct.
Setting the receipt correctly on each leg
For the business leg, choose the company receipt option and enter your employer's name — the receipt is made out to the company with the price and 6% VAT line, ready for your expense claim. For the personal leg — the extended stay, the departure after your own days off — book as a private traveller instead, so that receipt is made out to you and never touches your company's expense system at all.
It's worth double-checking which option you selected on each booking before you pay, since it's the one detail that actually separates the two — the booking form otherwise looks the same either way.
If your return flight covers both purposes
If there's only one departure transfer covering a trip that was partly business and partly personal, some companies ask you to expense it in full and note the personal portion, others prefer it booked and paid privately with no claim at all. That's a company policy question rather than a booking one — check what your employer expects before you book, since it decides which receipt option you choose.
Telling your company about the extension, or not
Whether your company needs to know about a personal extension at all is a policy question, not a booking one — some ask for advance notice if you're extending travel dates, others don't care as long as nothing personal appears on the expense claim. Either way, booking the personal leg privately keeps it entirely off any receipt your company sees, regardless of what you do or don't tell them separately.

Questions people ask before booking
Can one booking split automatically between business and personal costs?
No — book the business leg and the personal leg as two separate transfers, each with the receipt option (company or private) set correctly for that leg.
How do I make sure my company doesn't see the cost of my personal weekend?
Book the personal leg as a private traveller rather than choosing the company receipt option — that receipt is made out to you and never enters your company's expense system.
What if only one transfer covers a trip that was part business, part personal?
Check your company's expense policy on mixed-purpose trips — some ask for a claim with the personal portion noted, others prefer it booked privately. That decides which receipt option to choose at booking.
Does choosing the company receipt option cost anything extra?
No — it only changes who the receipt is made out to. The fixed price is the same either way.
Can I change which option I chose after booking?
Contact support before the trip if you selected the wrong option — it's easier to correct before the ride than after the receipt has been issued.
