Climbing and Expedition Gear: Getting It From Arlanda

Updated 3 min read

Climbing and expedition trips don't travel light. A single climber can land with a duffel of hard gear, a second bag of soft kit, and a rope bag on top — and multiply that across a team, and the boot space question stops being trivial. It's worth working out before you land, not at the kerb.

Here's how the luggage system actually counts expedition gear, and how to pick a category that has genuine room for it.

How the luggage budget works

Every vehicle category has one combined luggage budget rather than separate limits for each bag type — a large case or duffel counts as two units, a smaller bag as one, and you spend that budget however your gear is actually split.

  • Standard, Electric and Business: 4 passengers, a 6-unit luggage budget — 2 large bags + 2 cabin bags, or 4 cabin bags
  • SUV / XL: 6 passengers, a 10-unit luggage budget, up to 4 large cases
  • Minibus: 8 passengers, an 18-unit luggage budget, up to 8 large cases

Counting a real expedition load

A single climber with one large gear duffel and one smaller pack is already three units before anyone else's bags are counted. Two climbers each carrying that much puts you at six units before rope bags or hard cases are added — a Standard car's whole budget for two people alone. A full team with shared gear, rope bags and multiple large duffels is usually a Minibus situation, not because of passenger count but because of volume.

Long or oddly shaped items

A rope bag or an ice axe case is often more awkward in shape than heavy, which is a different problem from the unit count. Mention anything unusually long or oddly shaped in your booking notes, alongside your total bag count — we confirm it fits before pickup rather than finding out at the kerb.

Arriving after an expedition, not before one

Gear on the way home from an expedition often weighs more and smells worse than it did on the way out, and might include shared team equipment you didn't carry outbound. If your return load is meaningfully bigger than your outbound one, it's worth booking that leg as its own decision rather than assuming the same category will do — mention the change in your notes so it's confirmed properly.

Questions people ask before booking

How do I count expedition duffels in luggage units?

A large duffel or case counts as two units, a smaller bag or pack as one, against your vehicle category's combined luggage budget.

What if my team's gear doesn't fit a Standard car's budget?

Move up to SUV / XL for a 10-unit budget, or Minibus for 18 units if it's a full team with shared gear — choose based on your actual bag count, not passenger count alone.

Should I mention a rope bag or ice axe case separately?

Yes — anything unusually long or oddly shaped is worth a note alongside your total bag count, so it's confirmed before pickup.

Does the price change with the category I choose?

Yes, category affects the fixed price, which is shown clearly before you book.

Can I book a different category for the outbound and return legs?

Yes — each leg is its own booking, so you can match the category to whatever your gear load looks like on that specific day.

Does damp or muddy gear need special mention?

Not for the booking itself, though it's worth bagging genuinely wet or muddy gear separately for the ride — a courtesy to the vehicle rather than a requirement we ask for.
