Cross-Country Skis: Long, Light and Awkward

A downhill ski bag is long but usually within a fairly standard range; a cross-country set, especially a longer touring or racing pair, can run noticeably longer. Boot space in a car is fixed by its dimensions, not by how heavy the load is, so a light bag that's simply too long for the boot is a real possibility in a smaller category.

Add a note with the ski bag's length, and mention if you have poles in a separate bag as well. This goes through the same oversized-item process as any other long or unusual piece of luggage: we confirm before pickup that the car we're sending has room for it, rather than leaving it to be discovered at the kerb.

Skis rarely travel alone — boots, poles and often a separate bag of winter clothing usually come with them. Count all of it in your luggage units when choosing a category, not just the ski bag itself, so the car that's confirmed has room for everything, not only the one item you happened to flag.

A group travelling together for a ski trip multiplies the length problem — several long bags at once is a different fit question from a single one, even if the total weight is manageable. For more than two or three people each with a ski bag, it's worth booking SUV / XL or Minibus from the start rather than assuming a Standard car will stretch to fit everyone's gear alongside their normal luggage.
