Grandparents and Grandchildren in One Car

Three generations in one car sounds simple until you actually work out the seating: a grandparent who's more comfortable in the front seat, one or two children who need a car seat fitted correctly, and everyone else needing somewhere to sit too. It's not usually a hard problem, but it's worth thinking through before you book rather than discovering it doesn't quite work once everyone's at the kerb.

This guide is specifically about planning seats — not luggage, not the wider trip — for a multi-generational group sharing one car.

Working out the seating before you book

A Standard, Electric or Business car seats four; if that's grandparent, two parents and one child needing a seat, it fits, but there's no room for anything more. Add a second child needing a seat, or a second grandparent, and you're generally into SUV / XL territory, with six seats giving genuine room to arrange everyone comfortably rather than a tight fit.

Mention in your booking notes who's travelling and any specific seating need — a grandparent who prefers the front, a child seat for a toddler — and it's factored in when the car is confirmed, rather than sorted out once everyone's trying to get in.

Then count the luggage the same way, because a car with enough seats can still run out of boot. The saloon categories take 2 large bags + 2 cabin bags, or 4 cabin bags; SUV / XL takes up to four large cases in a 10-unit budget; the Minibus up to eight in 18 units. A grandparent's walking frame or a folded wheelchair goes in the booking notes so we can confirm it fits before pickup.

Child seats alongside adult passengers

If a grandchild needs a seat, request it with their age (under one, or one to three) in the same booking as the rest of the group. It's fitted before you land, and doesn't reduce the car's other seating — the vehicle category is chosen with the seat already accounted for.

Count everyone who needs a seat, including babies and toddlers, before you choose: Standard, Electric and Business seat four passengers, SUV / XL seats six, and the Minibus seats eight. Each child seat is added in the booking form with the child's age — under 1, or 1 to 3 years — and is fitted before pickup, with its price shown before you pay. For an older child who still needs a booster, bring your own.

On the day

Your driver's name, phone number and plate arrive before pickup, and every pickup includes 45 minutes of free waiting from when the driver confirms arrival — useful when getting three generations and their bags out of the door takes longer than planned. For airport pickups, add the flight number and the pickup follows the actual landing.
