Stockholm's Areas at a Glance: North, South, East and West of the City

If you're new to the region, the sheer number of suburb and municipality names around Stockholm can be disorienting — Sollentuna, Nacka, Botkyrka, Sigtuna, Huddinge and dozens more, with no obvious sense of where any of them actually sit relative to the city centre or to Arlanda. A rough mental map by direction solves most of that confusion in a couple of minutes.

North of the city, toward Arlanda

The northern side of the region is where Arlanda itself sits, and the towns and suburbs between the airport and central Stockholm — Sollentuna, Täby, Upplands Väsby, Märsta, Sigtuna — are generally the shortest hops to and from the airport. Further north again, Knivsta and Uppsala sit beyond Arlanda rather than between it and the city.

South of the city

South of central Stockholm covers a wide arc, from closer-in areas like Huddinge and Botkyrka to further-out places like Tyresö and Haninge. This side of the region tends to mean a longer drive to Arlanda than the northern suburbs, simply because it's travelling in the opposite direction from the airport.

East and west of the city

To the east, Nacka and Värmdö sit toward the archipelago, with Värmdö in particular involving island geography that can add to travel time beyond what the straight-line distance suggests. To the west, Ekerö sits out among the islands of Lake Mälaren, reached by a specific road link, while suburbs like Vällingby and Hässelby sit further along the western side of the city, generally routing around rather than through the centre toward Arlanda.
