Travelling with a Child Who Uses a Wheelchair
Updated 3 min read
A family travelling with a child who uses a wheelchair usually has two separate things to get right at once: a vehicle that can actually take the wheelchair, and a child seat that works for their child specifically, which isn't always the standard seat a booking form assumes by default. Getting both confirmed before you fly, rather than assumed, is the difference between a smooth pickup and a stressful one.
This guide covers noting both needs at booking and what to expect while you wait for us to confirm them.
Tell us both things, clearly, at booking
Use the booking notes to describe the wheelchair — folding or non-folding, its approximate size, whether your child transfers out of it for the journey or needs to remain in it — and separately, what your child needs in terms of a seat or restraint for travelling safely in the car. These are two different requirements and it helps to be specific about both rather than assuming one covers the other.
The standard child-seat options in the booking form — by age, under 1 year or 1 to 3 years — are built for typical needs and may not be right for your child. If that's the case, say so directly in the notes rather than booking a standard seat and hoping it works; it's better for us to know in advance what won't fit.
Wait for our confirmation before you fly
Because this isn't a standard booking, we confirm specifics with you directly once we've seen your notes — what vehicle we're sending, and how your child's seating will be handled — rather than leaving it as an assumption on either side. Get in touch as early as you can once you have your flight details, so there's time to sort this out properly rather than close to your travel date.
If anything about what you need isn't something we can confirm we can provide, we'll tell you honestly and as early as possible, rather than promising something at booking that doesn't materialise at the kerb.
On the day
Every pickup includes free waiting time, so there's no pressure to move quickly getting your child, the wheelchair and any other equipment into the car — that time is built into every booking, not something you need to ask for separately.

Questions people ask before booking
How do I book a suitable vehicle for a child who uses a wheelchair?
Describe the wheelchair and how your child travels in the booking notes, and contact us early — we confirm the specific vehicle with you directly rather than leaving it to be worked out on the day.
What if the standard child seat options don't fit my child's needs?
Say so directly in the notes rather than booking a standard option. We'd rather know in advance what your child actually needs.
How far ahead should I contact you about this?
As soon as you have your flight details. This isn't a standard booking, so the earlier we know, the more time there is to confirm everything properly.
Will you tell me honestly if you can't provide what we need?
Yes — if something isn't possible, we'd rather tell you clearly and early than promise it at booking and have it not work out at pickup.
Is there time pressure getting my child and equipment into the car?
No — every pickup includes free waiting time, so there's no need to rush getting settled.
