Service Animal, Luggage and Space
Updated 3 min read
A guide dog or assistance dog isn't luggage, and it isn't counted against your booking's luggage budget — but it does need genuine floor space to lie down comfortably for the ride, which is a different planning question from where a suitcase goes. Getting the car right means thinking about the dog, the passengers and the bags together, not just the passenger count on its own.
This guide covers the rule for guide and assistance dogs, how to plan the floor space they need, and what to add to your booking so the right car is waiting.
The rule for guide and assistance dogs
Guide dogs and assistance dogs travel free and always — there's no charge for them and no category of booking where they aren't accommodated. That's a simple, firm rule, separate from anything to do with luggage space or vehicle size.
Other animals, pets that aren't working assistance dogs, need to be requested at booking rather than assumed, since not every trip or vehicle is set up the same way for them.
Floor space is the real planning question
A large assistance dog lying down at your feet takes up real floor space in the back seat — more, in practice, than a similar-sized piece of luggage would, because it needs to stretch out rather than sit in a fixed shape. If you're travelling with luggage as well, particularly as a family or with a connecting flight's worth of bags, that floor space competes with legroom for other passengers.
For a solo traveller with a dog and moderate luggage, a Standard, Electric or Business car usually has enough floor space. For two or more passengers plus a larger dog and a full set of luggage, the SUV/XL category gives more floor room in the back without the dog's space cutting into anyone's legroom.
What to note when you book
Mention that you're travelling with a guide or assistance dog, roughly the dog's size, and how much luggage you're bringing alongside it. None of this changes the price — the dog isn't charged for — but it does help us match you to a car with the actual floor space the trip needs.
- Guide and assistance dogs travel free and always, with no separate charge
- Note the dog's approximate size alongside your luggage, since floor space is the real constraint
- Choose SUV/XL if you're travelling with other passengers, a larger dog and a full set of luggage

Questions people ask before booking
Is there a charge for bringing a guide dog or assistance dog?
No — guide dogs and assistance dogs travel free and always. There's no separate charge and no booking type where this doesn't apply.
Do I need to request my assistance dog in advance?
It's not required for a guide or assistance dog specifically, but mentioning size and luggage helps us match you to a car with enough floor space.
What about a pet that isn't a working assistance dog?
Other animals need to be requested at booking, since it depends on the trip and vehicle rather than being automatic the way it is for a guide or assistance dog.
Does the dog count against my luggage allowance?
No. The dog isn't counted in the luggage unit system — it's a separate, free allowance. What matters is the physical floor space, which is why it's worth noting alongside your bags.
Which vehicle category is best for a larger dog with a family's luggage?
SUV/XL, generally — more floor space in the back seat means the dog's room doesn't come at the cost of a passenger's legroom.
