Luggage Help for Visually Impaired Travellers
Updated 3 min read
The stretch between the terminal doors and the car is the part most guides skip, and it's often the hardest part of the journey for a visually impaired traveller — finding the right vehicle among rows of similar cars, locating your own bags on the way out, and getting everything into the boot without being able to see where things are.
This guide is about asking for real help at that stage, not just a ride once you're seated: identifying the car, loading the bags, and getting settled before the driver pulls away.

Finding the car
Your driver's name, phone number and licence plate are sent to you before pickup, which means you or someone helping you can call ahead rather than search visually for a plate number among a row of similar cars. It's worth noting in your booking that you'd like the driver to call or approach you directly at the pickup point rather than wait for you to find them — a small thing to ask for, and one that changes the whole first few minutes.
Loading the luggage
Ask for help with your bags in the booking notes, specifically — most drivers help as a matter of course, but naming it means the driver knows to guide you to the boot and describe what they're doing as they load, rather than working silently while you wait uncertain of what's happening.
If you're travelling with a cane, a guide dog, or both alongside your luggage, mention all of it together so the driver has the full picture before arriving, not pieced together at the kerb.
Getting in and settled
A driver who's been told in advance can describe the car briefly — which door, where the handle is — rather than leaving you to work it out. None of this needs to be complicated; a plain note like "I'm visually impaired, please meet me at the doors and describe the car and door" gives the driver what they need.
For a departure as well as an arrival
The same notes are worth adding to a departure booking too — meeting you at your door, helping load bags, and describing the drop-off point at the terminal works the same way in reverse. Each booking is treated separately, so it's worth repeating the request rather than assuming it carries over from a previous trip.
Travelling with someone who can help
If you're travelling with a sighted companion, it's still worth noting your needs in the booking — a companion can describe things too, but having the driver already briefed means less has to be explained in the moment, and your companion can focus on their own luggage rather than narrating everything for you as well.

Questions people ask before booking
Can the driver meet me at the terminal doors rather than have me find the car?
Yes — note it when you book. Your driver's phone number is sent before pickup as well, so you can call directly if it's easier.
Will the driver help load my luggage?
Drivers help with luggage as standard, and naming that you'd like guided, described help specifically means it's not left to guesswork at the kerb.
Can I travel with a guide dog and luggage together?
Yes. Guide dogs travel free and always — mention both the dog and your luggage together so the car is matched to the full picture.
Does asking for extra help cost more?
No. The fixed price is set by the vehicle category and route, not by any assistance you ask for during pickup or drop-off.
Can I add the same notes to my return or departure trip?
Yes — each booking is separate, so it's worth adding the same request again for a departure rather than assuming it carries over.
