Walking Frames, Crutches and Sticks in the Car
Updated 3 min read
A walking frame, a pair of crutches or a stick isn't complicated to transport, but it needs two things sorted in advance: somewhere in the boot for it to go, and a driver who expects to help you in and out of the car rather than waiting for you to manage alone.
This guide covers what to note when you book, how a folding rollator fits alongside luggage, and how to make sure the driver is ready to help before you're standing at the kerb working it out.

Boot space for a rollator or frame
Most folding walking frames collapse down to something close in size to a large suitcase and take up roughly the same space in the boot — one or two units against a car's luggage budget, depending on the model. Crutches and sticks are easier still; they lie flat and take up very little room.
Mention the frame in your booking notes alongside your other luggage, with rough dimensions folded if you have them, so it's counted properly against the vehicle's capacity rather than turning up as a surprise.
Asking for help getting in
If getting in and out is slower or needs a hand, say so directly — "please help me in and stow my frame in the boot" is enough. Every pickup includes free waiting time from when the driver confirms arrival, so there's no pressure built into the booking to rush the process.
Choosing the right vehicle category
For a single traveller with a folding rollator and ordinary luggage, a Standard, Electric or Business car is usually enough. If you're travelling with a companion, more luggage, or a bulkier walk-in frame that doesn't fold as small, the SUV/XL category's larger boot and higher luggage budget gives more room to work with.
- Note the walking frame or crutches alongside your other luggage when you book
- Ask specifically for help getting in and out if you'd like it
- Choose SUV/XL for a bulkier frame, a companion, or more luggage together
The rest of the journey
Your driver's name, phone number and licence plate are sent before pickup, and flight tracking means your pickup time follows your actual landing time rather than a fixed schedule — useful if getting from the gate to the pickup point simply takes you longer than it would another passenger.
A departure trip works the same way
If you're booking a pickup from your accommodation rather than the airport, the same notes apply — describe the frame or crutches, ask for help if you'd like it, and let the driver know if boarding might take a little longer than usual. It's worth repeating the request on a return trip rather than assuming it carries over from a previous booking, since each one is arranged separately.

Questions people ask before booking
Does a folding walking frame count against my luggage allowance?
Yes, roughly like a large suitcase — note it alongside your other bags when you book so the right vehicle category is chosen.
Will the driver help me get in and out of the car?
Ask for it specifically in your booking notes and the driver will expect to help — most do as a matter of course, but naming it removes any uncertainty.
Is there extra time if I need longer to board?
Every pickup includes free waiting time from when the driver confirms arrival, which covers slower boarding without extra charge.
What if my walking frame doesn't fold very small?
Mention its size when you book — for a bulkier frame, SUV/XL's larger boot is usually the better choice.
Do crutches or a stick need to be mentioned at all?
They take up little space, but it's still worth a short note so the driver isn't caught off guard and can help if needed.
