One Bag on a Later Flight: Wait or Leave?
Updated 3 min read
You've cleared the belt, your bag hasn't, and an airline desk has told you it's coming on a later flight. The instinct is to plant yourself in the arrivals hall and wait it out — but in most cases that's not actually necessary, and it isn't the option the airline itself is set up around.
This guide covers how delayed-baggage delivery normally works, and why waiting at the airport for a bag that's already been located usually isn't the better move.
What the airline does with a delayed bag
Once an airline has confirmed your bag missed the connection and knows which later flight it's on, the standard process is to deliver it to the address you leave at the baggage desk once it lands — you fill in a form (a Property Irregularity Report, usually) with your contact details and delivery address, and the airline takes it from there.
That process exists specifically so you don't have to wait at the airport for a bag that's already been found and is simply travelling later. Waiting at Arlanda for several more hours doesn't get your bag to you any faster than giving the airline your address does — it just means you spend those hours in a terminal instead of wherever you were actually going.
Deciding whether to wait or go
If the airline has a confirmed later flight and can reliably deliver to your address, going ahead with your original plans is usually the better use of your time — you're not gaining anything by staying, and you get to wherever you're headed on schedule.
The cases where waiting makes more sense are narrower: if you genuinely need something specific from the bag that can't be replaced or bought locally before delivery arrives, or if delivery to your address isn't realistic — you're changing accommodation, or heading somewhere the airline can't easily reach. Weigh that against the hours you'd spend waiting.
- Confirmed later flight and reliable delivery address: usually better to go ahead with your plans
- Something in the bag you genuinely need before delivery can arrive: waiting may make sense
- Changing address soon after arrival: tell the airline the address delivery should actually go to
What this means for your transfer
You don't need to change your booking to deal with a delayed bag — your pickup time already follows your flight's actual landing, and dealing with the baggage desk fits inside the free waiting window on most pickups. If sorting out the paperwork is taking longer than expected, message your driver with the number you were sent; we'd rather know than have you rush.
If you do decide to leave the airport before the bag issue is fully resolved, your driver is still exactly where you were told to meet them, and the fixed price and route for your ride don't change because of anything that happened at the baggage desk.

Questions people ask before booking
Should I wait at Arlanda for a bag on a later flight?
Usually not — if the airline has confirmed which flight it's on and can deliver to your address, going ahead with your plans gets you where you're going without losing hours in the terminal for no extra benefit.
Will dealing with the baggage desk make me miss my driver?
No — your pickup time already follows your flight's actual landing, and 45 minutes of free waiting on the pickup gives you room to sort out the paperwork. Message your driver if it's taking longer than that.
What if I need to give the airline a different delivery address than planned?
Tell the airline the correct address for delivery when you file the report — it doesn't need to match your original accommodation plan, just be somewhere you'll actually be to receive it.
Does a missing bag change my transfer booking?
No — the price, route and car stay the same. There's nothing about your booking that needs to change because of a baggage delay.
How do I contact my driver if I'm held up at the baggage desk?
Your driver's phone number is sent to you before pickup — message or call directly and let them know you're on your way.
