Arriving with a Child Bike Trailer

A child bike trailer is an odd shape to travel with — light enough to lift with one hand, but bulky in a way that doesn't fold down neatly like ordinary luggage. It doesn't fit the usual case-and-cabin-bag arithmetic, so it's worth handling separately from your regular luggage count when you book.

Why a trailer doesn't fit the usual luggage count

Vehicle categories carry a combined luggage budget measured in units, which works well for suitcases and bags of predictable shapes — a folded, boxed bike trailer isn't that. Its awkward dimensions, rather than its weight, are what actually decide whether it fits a given boot, so treating it as "one more large bag" in the unit count can be misleading either way.

The honest approach is to describe it properly rather than guess at how many luggage units it's worth.

Give the folded or boxed dimensions of the trailer in your booking notes, along with your regular luggage and passenger count. We confirm by message before pickup whether the vehicle category you've chosen has room, or whether a larger category is the better fit.

If a larger category turns out to be the better fit

If the trailer needs more room than your first choice of category allows, moving up to a larger category — with more luggage room as well as more seats — is usually a straightforward change to make before you pay, once we've confirmed what actually fits.

This is far more common with a bike trailer than with ordinary suitcases, precisely because its shape doesn't fold or stack the way a case does. A trailer that seems compact when you lift it can still take up more boot space than two or three regular bags combined, simply because of its rigid frame and wheels — which is exactly why we'd rather have the real dimensions in advance than a rough guess.

Travelling with the rest of your cycling gear

If you're bringing other cycling equipment alongside the trailer — panniers, a repair kit, a child's own small bike — add those to your booking notes too, so the full picture is confirmed together rather than piece by piece. Families cycling as a group often have more combined gear than the trailer alone suggests, and it's easier for us to size the right vehicle once with everything listed than to revisit the booking each time something else is added.
