It's worth understanding the actual rule anyway, because vehicle categories are sized by a combined luggage budget alongside passenger count, and cabin bags do count toward it even without a single checked case between you.

Cabin bags still count toward the luggage budget

Every vehicle category has a combined luggage budget in units, not a separate allowance for checked and cabin bags — a large checked case counts as two units, a cabin-sized bag as one, against the same total. That means four cabin bags aren't invisible to the count just because none of them went through check-in; they're four units, the same as they'd be counted if you were carrying them as checked luggage instead.

It's a reasonable assumption to make that "no checked bags" means "any car works", but the category is chosen by total luggage volume and passenger count together, not by whether a bag was checked or carried on.

Our Standard, Electric and Business categories seat four passengers with a six-unit luggage budget — four cabin bags at one unit each comes to four units, inside that budget. The saloon categories also cap luggage at four pieces in total — 2 large bags + 2 cabin bags, or 4 cabin bags — so four cabin bags is exactly a full load, with coats and small handbags on laps rather than in the boot.

Four friends with four cabin bags and nothing else is, in other words, a straightforward fit for the smallest category we offer — no need to size up just because everyone happens to be carrying their own bag rather than sharing checked ones.

Add a fifth passenger, or a fifth substantial bag beyond the four, and the arithmetic shifts — a fifth passenger alone needs the six-seat SUV/XL category regardless of luggage, and a fifth bag of any size takes a four-passenger group past the Standard category's four-piece limit even without a fifth person.
