Payment Declined at Checkout: What to Try
Updated 3 min read
A declined card is one of those small failures that arrives at the worst possible moment — you've entered everything, you're ready to lock in your transfer, and checkout throws it back at you with no obvious reason why. Almost always, this is your bank's system being cautious, not a problem with the booking itself.
Here's the order most people have success trying things in, so you're not just retrying the same card and hoping.
Check your banking app first
Many declines happen because a bank's 3-D Secure verification step needs an approval you haven't seen yet — a push notification you missed, or a prompt sitting in your banking app waiting for you to open it. Before trying anything else, check whether your bank's app is asking you to approve the payment; approving it there often lets the same attempt go through.
Try a phone wallet next
If there's nothing to approve in your banking app, a phone wallet like Apple Pay or Google Pay, where it's available to you, uses a different authentication path than typing a card number in directly. That can succeed where a direct card entry was declined, particularly if the original decline was related to how the card details were verified rather than the card itself.
Try a different card
Some banks are more cautious than others about payments to merchants outside your home country, or to a merchant they haven't seen you pay before — that caution can trigger a decline even when there's nothing actually wrong with the card or the payment. A second card, if you have one, is a reasonable next step, and it isolates whether the issue is with that specific card's issuer rather than with checkout itself.
If nothing works
If you've tried your banking app, a wallet and a different card and checkout still won't go through, contact your bank directly — they can tell you specifically why a payment to a Swedish merchant was blocked and how to allow it. It's also worth contacting us if you suspect something odd on the booking side rather than the payment side, though the vast majority of declines resolve at the bank.

Questions people ask before booking
My card was declined at checkout — what should I try first?
Open your banking app and check for a 3-D Secure approval prompt you might have missed — that's the most common reason a payment is declined at this step, and approving it there often fixes it immediately.
The bank app shows nothing to approve — what next?
Try a phone wallet like Apple Pay or Google Pay if it's available to you, since it uses a different verification path than typing the card in directly.
Still no luck — should I try a different card?
Yes, a second card is a reasonable next step, particularly if the first is a card your bank sometimes blocks on foreign or unfamiliar merchants.
Could the decline be caused by a foreign merchant block?
It's possible — some banks flag payments to merchants outside your home country by default. Contacting your bank to confirm and allow the payment, or trying a different card, both work.
Will I be charged twice if I retry after a decline?
No — a declined attempt isn't charged. Only a successful payment completes the booking and is charged.
Who should I contact if my bank keeps declining the payment?
Your bank directly — they can tell you specifically why a payment to a Swedish merchant is being blocked and how to allow it going forward.
