Two Adults, Two Children, Four Cases: Which Car?
Updated 3 min read
Two adults and two children is the most straightforward family booking there is on paper — four people, four seats, done. In practice the decision usually isn't about seats at all; it's about whether the luggage fits and whether a child seat is arranged, and those are worth thinking through separately.
Here's how to work out the right category for exactly this family shape.

Seats aren't usually the constraint
A family of four fits the Standard, Electric or Business category on seating alone — all three seat up to four passengers, so the question isn't whether you fit, it's whether your specific luggage does.
Where luggage actually lands
A Standard car's 6-unit budget covers a fair amount: two large checked cases (four units) plus two cabin bags (two units) comes to six units — exactly the budget, and also the saloon categories' four-piece limit. That's a common load for a family of four on a standard trip, but any fifth bag moves you up a category.
If you're travelling heavier — four large cases rather than two, for example — that's eight units on its own, which is past a Standard car's 6-unit budget. At that point the SUV/XL, with its 10-unit budget and two extra seats, is the better fit even though your family only needs four of its six seats.
Child seats
If you need a child seat, add it in the booking form when you book, stating the child's age (under 1, or 1–3 years) — the seat's price is shown before you pay rather than discovered at the kerb. Book this in advance where you can, since it's something that needs to be arranged ahead of pickup rather than sorted on the spot.
Putting it together
- Count your bags using the unit rule — a large case as two units, a cabin bag as one — and add them up.
- Compare the total to a Standard car's 6-unit budget; if it fits, that's your category.
- If your luggage exceeds that, move up to the SUV/XL and check against its 10-unit budget instead.
- Add a child seat in the booking form with the child's age, and it's fitted before pickup.
Strollers and other extras
A stroller doesn't fit neatly into the luggage unit count, so it's worth flagging separately in your booking notes regardless of which category you choose — a folded stroller, a double buggy or a travel cot are all things we'd rather confirm space for before pickup than leave to be worked out at the kerb.

Questions people ask before booking
Does a family of four with two children fit a Standard car?
Yes, on seats — all four fit a Standard, Electric or Business category. Whether it's the right choice depends on your luggage, not your headcount.
How much luggage can a Standard car actually take for a family of four?
A 6-unit budget with at most two large cases and four pieces — two large cases and two cabin bags (six units) fits exactly, but a third large case or a fifth bag would exceed it.
How do I book a child seat?
Request it in the booking notes with the child's age — we confirm what's possible before pickup, the same way as flagging a stroller.
What if our luggage doesn't fit the category we picked?
Mention it in the notes or contact us — we'd rather move you to a bigger category before you pay than have it discovered doesn't fit at pickup.
Is there an extra charge for booking with children?
The price is set by vehicle category and route, not by passenger age — a family of four is priced the same as any other group of four in the same category.
Do we need to mention a stroller separately from our luggage count?
Yes — a stroller doesn't fit the standard unit count, so flag it in the booking notes and we'll confirm space for it before pickup.
